Wolfburn Distillery Langskip Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Highlands, Scotland
Another winning Single Malt from Wolfburn, served au natural at cask strength.
Thurso is the northernmost town on the British mainland. The first Wolfburn distillery was born on the site in the early 1800s. But by 1872, production had ceased. In 2011, Single Malt industry veterans Shane Fraser and Lain Kerr revived the namesake far northern spirit. They broke ground in May of 2012 and had the first completed buildings by September, with production starting the following year. They haven’t looked back — developing a range of Single Malts and periodic small batch special releases.
Probably the best thing about Wolfburn Langskip is its simplicity. 100% signature Wolfburn Single Malt aged entirely in first-fill Bourbon casks and bottled at near cask strength — 58% ABV — in its natural color and without chill-filtering. That’s it. Note the refreshing lack of marketing spic in that description. When you’ve got game, there is little need to embellish. And though this is an NAS Spirit, this powerful, spicy dram is silky smooth and fresh.
Smartass corner:
The “Langskip” were Viking long-ships with a single, central sail and banks of oars. It is the tradition ship you might think of transporting Viking warriors.
