Leave all your preconceptions of youthful white Rums behind and enjoy.
Normally, at this point we write about the producer of a given Spirit. But today we have a different challenge. The Rum we are discussing today comes form two different producers who decided to create something together cooperatively. The two distilleries in question are two Caribbean Rum-making powerhouses: Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados and Hampden Estate Rums in Jamaica. And just to add a little more mystery, the Rum has two different names, both of which are in ancient Latin.
Probitas White Blended Rum is apremium blend. Foursquare contributes a pair of lovely Rums produced on their Coffey column still (one new and the other aged two years) and Hampden delivers a lovely pot-still Rum that is also un-aged. The biggest component is the un-aged Foursquare Rum. On the label they say, “impeccably distilled and blended Rum for all aspiring cocktail craftsmen.” And this is indeed true — it’s a bartender’s dream in flavor, pairings, and in 47% ABV. But leave any preconceptions of white Rum mixers behind. This youthful Rum is a solid, delicious sipper on its own as well.
Smartass corner: In the EU, this Rum is called “Veritas” — meaning “truth” in latin. But that name was taken in the US, so it’s called Probitas. Probitas means “goodness,” also in ancient Latin.
