The Macallan 1824 Series Oscuro Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Speyside - Highlands, Scotland
The Macallan 1824 Series Oscuro Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Speyside - Highlands, Scotland
A simply beautiful sherried Single Malt, perfectly aged in Macallan’s signature style.
Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the "Big 3" Single Malts in Scotland. Fortunately, they have achieved this scale without sacrificing quality. A change in UK labeling laws aced them out of their "Speyside" designation. But just because the British Parliament gerrymandered the "official" boundaries doesn’t mean whiskey-lovers have to pay any attention.
Their achievements are numerous — including setting the record price ever paid at auction for a single bottle of Scotch. They produce a very broad range of world-class Single Malt Whiskies that have a huge global following.
The Macallan Oscuro has no age statement… and we’re TOTALLY fine with that. For this strictly limited release, Macallan took vintage casks of Single Malt filled across a ten year range — from 1987 through 1997. These lovely Whiskies were reduced to a PERFECT 46.5% ABV, married, and then re-casked to rest for at least six more months before being bottled in 2015. So, theoretically the "youngest possible" component was aged in Sherry casks eighteen years, but there is no way to know for certain across the batches. Thus the lack of a formal age statement. But if that bothers you, then you’re just missing the point entirely. Because this lovely dram in a stunning, artistic decanter is a singular experience unto itself.
Smartass Corner:
The word "oscuro" in Spanish means "dark." This is to represent the deep amber hue.
