Meet Agent Doublewood.

It was way back in 1892 in Dufftown, Speyside, when William Grant of William Grant & Sons built the Balvenie Distillery. And it wasn't even his first one as he opened Glenfiddich distillery in 1886! Busy man. Anyway, only a year later, in 1893, the first Whisky distillation took place at the same site in the Scottish Highlands where Balvenie Speysiders are produced still today. (Ah, don’t you just love it when good things stay the same.)

Balvenie is still one of a handful of distilleries in Scotland to grow its own barley, use traditional floor maltings and even keep a team of coopers on site to take care of their copper stills. And last but not least, they've got Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, one of the industry most experienced experts who joined Balvanie in 1962 at 17 and is still overseeing the production of the most hand-crafted of Single Malts.

The Balvenie 12 Year Old Doublewood is one of their most popular creations. First launched in 1993 by the one and only David Stewart, this dram was quite the revolution back in the day, using the 'wood finishing' process Stewart designed in 1982 – doublewood. So, what's it all about? First, the brown stuff spends at least 12 years in traditional ex-Bourbon barrels, then, it's moved to ex-Oloroso Sherry casks for another 9 months. Finally, individual casks are "married" in large tuns for 3-4 months. Bottled at 80 proof on site, this beauty is soft and delicate but full of depth and flavor at the same time.
