Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Cask Exploration Series PAC 01 Heavily Peated 8 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Islay, Scotland
Rich, elegant, and very much Islay.
As early as the 18th century, the Harvey family was a big player on the distilling map of the island of Islay, where they owned and operated several distilleries. In 1881, the three Harvey brothers – William, John, and Robert – received an inheritance; can you guess what they spent it on? Obviously, they opened a new state-of-the-art distillery on the island of Islay – Bruichladdich. Today, this producer of 1.5 million liters of the finest Scotch Whisky per year is owned by the French company Remy Cointreau, which totally explains their Wine-based approach that focuses on origin, terroir, traceability, and authenticity.
Port Charlotte PAC:01 2011 is part of their Cask Exploration series. This is a delicious heavily peated beast that was distilled, matured and bottled on the unique island of Islay. It’s actually a combo of 2 parcels: parcel numero uno spent 6 years in ex-American Whiskey casks and an additional 2 years in 1st fill French oak casks that used to hold red Wine from the French Pauillac region. Now, parcel numero duo was matured for 7 years in ex-American Whiskey casks before it was finished in 2nd fill French oak casks that held Red wine from the Pauillac region in France. How do you translate this to the language of Whisky flavors? You could say the dram boasts a vibrant and full-bodied character, bringing you balanced notes of typical dry barbeque smoke, marine breeze and berries.
