Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 12.1 Super Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Islay, Scotland
Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 12.1 Super Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Islay, Scotland
A gentle but powerful dance of heavy smoke and delicate fruity florals.
As early as the 18th century, the Harvey family was a big player on the distilling map of the island of Islay, where they owned and operated several distilleries. In 1881, the three Harvey brothers – William, John, and Robert – received an inheritance; can you guess what they spent it on? Obviously, they opened a new state-of-the-art distillery on the island of Islay – Bruichladdich. Today, this producer of 1.5 million liters of the finest Scotch Whisky per year is owned by the French company Remy Cointreau, which totally explains their Wine-based approach that focuses on origin, terroir, traceability, and authenticity.
The Octomore line has been pushing the boundaries of Whisky laws since 2002. Heavily peated and bottled at cask strength, usually after 5 years of maturation in ex-American Whiskey casks, every edition takes it a little further. But since all of them are sold out before you know it, it’s safe to say none of them takes it too far. Made from 100% Scottish Concerto barley and patiently distilled on the island of Islay, it’s the stripped back maturation profile that makes Octomore 12.1 a delicate but powerful dance of cereal-rich, vanilla, citrus, fudge and malty notes. This dram was malted to 130.8 PPM and the unadulterated heavy smoke is balanced with their fruity and floral distillate. Delicioso.
