1996 Caroni 20 Year Old Heavy Trinidad Rum, Trinidad and Tobago
Caroni Rum might have a cult following today, but the Caroni Distillery started as a state-run operation in Trinidad. It was founded in the early 19th century on the grounds of a sugar cane factory.
The traditionally produced Rum was a popular drink of the British Navy, but other than that, Caroni never really hit it big.
The whole thing shut down in the early 2000s, and if not by chance, the now precious liquid would go to waste, not the top of the Rum heap.
Lucky for us, Luca Gargano, the CEO of Veiler, discovered the abandoned Caroni warehouse full of barrels. He bottled some and let others age in Trinidad. And the rest is collector-frenzy.
What we have here is Caroni’s 34th release. You’ll find this Rum described as ‘heavy’ and concentrated, with an angel share about 12 times above average. It was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2016. Only 3,800 bottles of this delicacy fully matured in Trinidad exist.
