Compass Box 'Vellichor' Blended Scotch Whisky, Scotland
Like a good old book.
The year was 2000 when John Glaser started the Compass Box Whisky Company in his kitchen. An American in the UK, he used to work for a large distiller before he thought, everyone is making Scotch Whisky the same way, why not shake things up and bring back the old model of the Scotch Whisky blending house. So, he threw himself in blending boutique Scotch Whiskies. But how did they go from kitchen to Blending Room in London with more than a dozen of employees, you ask? Not by compromising any quality, that's for sure. Sourcing only the best oak from the Vosges in France and the woods of Missouri, making your own custom casks and seeking only the best casks from the very best distilleries oughta do it.
Oh, and unlike mass produced Whiskies, they are careful not to go too crazy on the number of components in their blends. They also don’t believe in chill-filtering or adding artificial color, but they do believe great wood is important and so is drinking good Whisky any way YOU like. Ah, a manifesto we can get behind!
Now, have you heard of velichor? If you haven’t, you’ve probably still smelled it. Velichor means the scent of second-hand bookshops.
Compass Box Vellichor Limited Edition Scotch Whisky was inspired by that exact special fragrance. To recreate it with fine Whisky, the liquid was sourced from a distiller and bottler in the north of Scotland. The whiskies were blended before returning to ex-Sherry casks. Then, Compass Box combined these casks with bold Malts from the Macallan, Highland Park, and Caol Ila distilleries. “The taste evolves and intensifies as any good political thriller or historical romance should,” they say. To be savored with a book, at bedtime.
